Gardenia jasminoides by KryMizunagij Gardenia jasminoides by KryMizunagij
Personification of Gardenia jasminoides (common gardenia, or kuchinashi in Japanese) and Cephonodes hylas.

Cephonodes hylas is a Palaearctic lepidopteran that belongs to family Sphingidae, and its larva mainly feeds on common gardenia. I wanted to use the brilliant yellow colour of gardenia fruits, but wasn't really successful...

By the way, gardenia fruits are widely used in Japanese cuisine for producing bright yellow colours. For example, the yellow colour of kinton (mashed sweet potatoes with chestnuts) comes from gardenia. Kimeshi (or ouhan), a yellow rice dish from Bungo province, is also dyed with gardenia. It is suggested that the idea of dying rice yellow came from Spanish paella, since Usuki, the provincial capital of Bungo, was one of the major trading ports with Spain and Portugal during the 16th century.
